Honolulu Eyes Expansion of H-Power Plant

The expansion, as proposed, will add a third boiler to increase waste disposal by 120,000 tons per year.

Released Wednesday, December 01, 2004

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The City and County of Honolulu are conducting studies to determine the feasibility of a $64 million expansion of the H-Power Waste-to-Energy Plant. An expansion of the plant would reduce the amount of solid waste that goes to local landfills and would also provide a back-up boiler to support the 63-megawatt Alstom steam turbine generator. H-Power has been in operation since 1990 and has the capability to dispose of 600,000 tons of garbage per year. The plant serves the municipal solid waste disposal needs of 850,000 residents and over six million visitors per year.

The expansion, as proposed, will add a third boiler to increase waste disposal by 120,000 tons per year. At this time, there are no plans to add an additional steam turbine generator, but the new boiler will be used to allow the power plant to continue normal operations during periods of boiler maintenance.

The City and County of Honolulu, along with the plant operator, Covanta Energy Corporation (NYSE:CVGYQ ) (Fairfield, New Jersey) are conducting feasibility studies for the project. If the project moves forward, Covanta will also assist with permitting, design, engineering, and construction management. Once the project is approved, construction is anticipated to begin in 2006.

Since beginning commercial operation in 1990, H-Power has converted nine million tons of waste into electricity, while supplying five percent of the electricity used on Oahu. The plant also collects ferrous and non-ferrous metals from the waste stream and recycles them through metal dealers.
