Horizon Milling Plant in Topeka Sees Last Day of Operation

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Leading U.S. flour miller Horizon Milling LLC (Wayzata, Minnesota), which is a joint venture of CHS Incorporated (St. Paul, Minnesota) and Cargill Incorporated (Minneapolis, Minnesota), will produce their last batch of flour today at their 129-year-old milling operation in Topeka, Kansas.

The mill was in need of upgrades to operate efficiently, but the company decided to close it permanently and serve customers from other locations. The closure affected 56 employees who worked at the mill, and dismantling and demolition are expected to begin in February of next year. Much of the equipment will be relocated to the mill in Newton, Kansas, that is being expanded.

The mill had the capacity of producing 8,500 hundredweight of flour. Cargill acquired the mill from Allied Milling Corporation in 1982. The mill is located at 200 North East Jefferson Street in Shawnee County.
