The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) (Faridabad, India) (Government of India Enterprise) awarded a turn-key engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for a grassroot 520-megawatt (MW) hydroelectric power station. The $340 million hydroelectric power project is to be located in the western region of India's Madhya Pradesh state, approximately one kilometer downstream from the confluence of the Kaveri and Narmada rivers.
The turn-key EPC contract was awarded to a consortium consisting of India's own Jaiprakash Industries Limited (Lucknow, India) an Indian civil works contractor and Germany's Voith Siemens Hydro Private Limited (NYSE:SI ) (New Delhi, India), which will supply the hydro turbine/generators.
The hydroelectric project will consist of a 3,112 foot long and 239-foot high concrete gravity dam with a central ogee spillway, 186 foot long, with 23 (55 x 65 ft) gates. It will also have eighteen construction sluices, a head race tunnel, intake structure, with eight 28 foot diameter steel penstocks, and a surface powerhouse consisting of eight 65 MW (Francis vertical) hydro turbine/generators. It will also have a tailrace channel and cofferdams for the diversion of the river to a safe level for the construction of the main dam.
At the current schedule, the project is scheduled to be completed and commissioned by the third quarter of 2008.
