India to Relax Rules to Address Solar Panel Shortage

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (New Delhi) is planning to relax the nation's Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar panels, since domestic manufacturers are unable to meet present demand.

The ALMM was put in place as a means to boost domestic production of solar panels. But without the change, India's goal of increasing its solar capacity from a little more than 60 gigawatts (GW) to 280 GW by 2030 could be compromised due to the current lack of domestic manufacturing capacity.

The two-year relaxation will make it possible for Chinese and other foreign companies to take part in solar development projects in India. The decision is expected to provide relief to solar developers who have been struggling to find modules at a reasonable price, since the basic customs duty on modules was increased to 40% last year. The requirement that developers source modules solely from companies listed under ALMM created additional pressure.
