Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India's largest thermal power generating company National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) (New Delhi, India) recently awarded Bharat Heavy Industries Limited (BHEL) (New Delhi) the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth about $480 million for the balance-of-plant (BOP) for a Phase II 1,000-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station expansion. Simhadri Phase II will be next to the Simhadri Phase I 1,000-MW power station in the city of Vishakhapatam in the northeastern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Phase I went into commercial operation in the end of 2002.
The EPC contract calls for the installation of two pulverized coal-fired boilers that will produce super concentrated steam that will drive two 500-MW steam turbine generators that will increase the site capacity to 2,000 MW. The coal-fired power plant will be equipped with the latest control technology and equipment to limit emissions with low NOx burners to control nitrogen oxides and baghouses to capture particulates. The project will continue to seek bids for the supply and installation of piping packages plus separate bids for the 400-kilovolt switchyard. Because of the power plant's location along Andhra Pradesh's seacoast, seawater will be drawn for condenser cooling similar to Simhadri's stage I. It will need approximately 5.9 million tons per annum, which calls for additional seawater pumps to cool the plant plus an additional pump for cooling the towers.
In the latest news pertaining to the Simhadri coal-fired power plant site, NTPC recently awarded a design, engineering, supply and installation contract to Larsen and Toubro (L&T) (Mumbai, Maharashtra), a major engineering and construction firm. The $114 million contract will supply two 1,600 ton/per hour coal-handling plants that will serve both stages I and II. The power project has been scheduled for a second-quarter 2008 mechanical construction kickoff with a completion and commissioning date set for second or third quarter 2011.
