Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Cayuga Power Station, which is located in Cayuga, Indiana, shut down its 531-megawatt (MW), coal-fired Unit 2 following vibration issues that officials believe are related to a No. 2 bearing. The station is owned by Duke Energy Indiana Incorporated, a subsidiary of Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina).
The unit was taken offline Friday morning after employees detected vibrations in the turbine. Officials said they will perform a thorough investigation on additional components before making repairs. They expect to return the unit to service Friday, July 3, if there are no delays.
Sources added that they want both units ready to provide electricity during hot weather.
The Cayuga units receive cooling water from the Wabash River, which has caused a significant concern for Unit 2 in the past due to the drought and low levels. Drought conditions can impact electricity generation and power-related equipment when some rivers and reservoirs reach low levels.
The coal-fired plant has two generating coal units with a total capacity of 1,062 MW when at full load. Unit 1 continues to operate at full capacity.
