PT Indonesia Asahan Alumina, through a joint venture with PT Aneka Tambang, is set to increase Indonesia's alumina capacity as it completes engineering on its smelter-grade alumina refinery in Mempawah, West Kalimantan.
The alumina refinery is the latest in several alumna projects in the pipeline, as Indonesia's government is crediting a ban on ore exports with a growth in smelter construction. Companies with alumina refineries in the region include PT Panca Raja Perkasa, with its $500 million project in Ketapang; PT WHW Kendawangan's $400 million, two-phase expansion at its Well Harvest Winning Alumina Refinery; and PT Indopura Resources' $300 million chemical-grade alumina project, which is currently bogged down due to funding.
