Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). With the completion of Toyota’s new pickup and SUV assembly plant in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, this fall, industrial construction in Bexar County will shift from automotive related projects to predominately power plant related projects in the 2007-08 time frame. Currently, there are five major industrial manufacturing plants under construction in Bexar County, Texas, all of which are in the city limits of San Antonio, and all but one of these projects is automotive related.

Led by the $800 million truck and SUV assembly plant under construction by Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America’s (Erlanger, Kentucky), Bexar County, Texas is one of the hottest areas of the country for industrial plant construction in 2006. Scheduled to begin operations in October 2006, the San Antonio assembly plant has attracted a slew of tier supplier plant construction in the county, including TG Texas LLC, a subsidiary of Toyoda Gosei Company Limited, which is constructing an automotive parts manufacturing plant in San Antonio. James N Gray Company (Austin, Texas) is the design-build contractor for the 400,000 square foot plant that will supply Toyota with interior and exterior plastic injection molded parts. This plant should be completed by October 2006 as well.

Tenneco Automotive (Lake Forest, Illinois) is nearing completion of $35 million, 130,000 square foot plant that will manufacture exhaust components for just-in-time delivery to the Toyota plant.

The only non-automotive related project currently under construction is DPT Laboratories Limited (San Antonio) first phase $24 million pharmaceutical research and development lab addition, which should be complete by the end of the year.

As this year’s construction winds down, area contractors will shift attention to more than $1 billion worth of power related projects scheduled to begin construction in Bexar County over the next two years, including upgrades to CPS Energy plants.
