Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As cheap, abundant natural gas from shale formations is produced in the U.S., the production of ethane and ethane-derived ethylene continues to grow in the U.S. While the domestic market can consume some of this, there is an increasing need to export these products to other markets, as well as to store the product. Industrial Info is tracking more than $1.1 billion of ethylene and ethane terminal projects in the U.S.

Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE:EPD) (Houston, Texas) and Navigator Holdings Limited (NYSE:NVGS) (London, England) announced Tuesday that they had begun construction on a joint-venture ethylene export terminal at Enterprise's Morgan's Point facility in La Porte, Texas, on the Houston Ship Channel. The facility will be able to export approximately 2.2 billion pounds of ethylene per year and will have refrigerated storage for 66 million pounds. The facility is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2019. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $300 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Down the road in Mont Belvieu, Texas, Enterprise is constructing an ethylene storage cavern and pipeline to support the export facility. Enterprise is converting an existing cavern to store 5.3 million barrels of ethylene. The pipeline will run from Mont Belvieu to the export terminal and on to Bayport, Texas. Optimized Process Designs LLC (Katy, Texas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $50 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Also at the Morgan's Point facility, Enterprise plans to expand its ethane refrigeration unit to increase the capacity of the plant. Construction is planned to occur this summer. The project has an estimated TIV of $30 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In nearby Seabrook, Texas, the Odfjell Group (Bergen, Norway) plans to construct an ethylene export terminal. The existing 2.4 million-barrel chemical terminal will be modified by adding facilities including a refrigerated storage tank to export ethylene and natural gas liquids to meet market demand. Construction on the $300 million project could begin this summer and be completed in the first half of 2019. JGC America Incorporated (Houston) is engineer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

American Ethane (Houston) is planning to construct an ethane export terminal in Convent, Louisiana. The facility would liquefy 8 million to 10 million tons per year of ethane to be loaded onto very large gas carriers (VLGCs) for export abroad, primarily to China. The facility would have a storage capacity of 180,000 cubic meters of liquid ethane. Construction on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $500 million, could begin in the third quarter this year, taking about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
