Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $5.65 billion in planned Power Industry project starts and completions in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. However, with hurricanes Florence and Michael recently rolling through the region, particularly the Carolinas, Industrial Info continues to research whether these kickoffs and completions could be delayed or perhaps even cancelled altogether. North Carolina, with $2.83 billion in planned project starts and completions, leads the region in terms of project value, followed by Virginia, with $1.98 billion.

Kickoffs
Among the largest Power project starts in the region being tracked by Industrial Info is Duke Energy Corporation's (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) addition of a 400-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired combustion turbine at its power plant in Stanley, North Carolina. Construction is planned to begin before the end of the year for completion in the first half of 2020. Siemens Energy Incorporated (Orlando, Florida) is performing design-build work on the project, which has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $320 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Solar power projects feature prominently in this quarter's project starts and completions in the region. Among these is Sun Energy 1 LLC's (Mooresville, North Carolina) construction of an 80-MW photovoltaic project near Roper, North Carolina. The grassroot plant will feature 108 solar arrays. The project is expected to be completed next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

While hydropower projects in the U.S. are relatively few and far between, Cube Hydro Partners LLC (Bethesda, Maryland) plans to modernize its Yadkin Falls hydropower station near Badin, North Carolina. The project includes refurbishment of a 10-MW S. Morgan Smith vertical Francis turbine generator and two 11-MW Allis Chalmers propeller turbine generators to improve reliability and extend plant life. Construction is set to begin before the end of the year and be completed in fourth-quarter 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Of course, no generation facilities could be of service without transmission infrastructure. In South Carolina, Santee Cooper (Monck's Corner, South Carolina) plans to construct a 33-mile transmission line. The 230-kilovolt line will run between Marion and Red Bluff, and will help ensure grid reliability for the surrounding area. Construction is expected to begin soon and be completed by the end of 2019. The project has an estimated TIV of $33 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Completions
Some even larger projects are planned to wrap up in the quarter. Chief among these is Dominion Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) construction of the 1,588-MW Greensville County Power Plant near Emporia, Virginia. Construction on the $1.3 billion project began in late 2015 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The combined-cycle facility will use three 350-MW Mitsubishi combustion turbine generators and a 550-MW Alstom steam turbine generator. Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction.

In North Carolina, EDF Renewable Energy (San Diego, California) is wrapping up construction of a 79.9-MW solar farm near Conway. The facility will use 370,000 photovoltaic solar panels on a single-axis tracking system. Construction began in the first quarter of this year. The project has an estimated TIV of $160 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

About 100 miles west, in Durham, North Carolina, Carolina Solar Energy LLC (Durham) is putting the finishing touches on the 71-MW Brantley Farm solar plant. Cypress Creek Renewables (Ashville, North Carolina) is providing engineering on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $140 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

While solar projects are bringing clean energy to North Carolina, Duke is also taking a step toward cleaner energy with a natural gas fuel conversion project at its Rogerside Energy Complex in Mooresboro, North Carolina. At the 1,370-MW plant, Duke will convert the coal-fired Unit 5 boiler to run from 40% natural gas and 60% coal. Unit 6, completed in 2012 and using clean-coal technology, will be converted to run from 100% natural gas to improve plant emissions. Construction on the $56 million project began earlier this year and is expected to be completed by yearend. Day & Zimmermann Incorporated (Greenville, South Carolina) is the general contractor.
