Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Invensys Process Systems (IPS) (Plano, Texas), an enterprise technology, software and consulting firm focusing on process manufacturing, plant optimization, business operations and enterprise performance, has announced that it has signed five contracts to make automation upgrades to five power plants in Indonesia. The upgrades will be done for state-owned electric firm Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN).
The five power plants, with a total power generation capacity of 3,820 megawatts (MW), are located in Jawa Barat, Jawa Tengah and Jawa Timur. IPS will be involved in providing automation solutions and distributed control systems (DCS) to these power plants. The automation program is part of Indonesia's 10,000 MW Crash Program, which was initiated in 2004 with the aim of adding 10,000 MW of additional power by 2010 to the country's total installed capacity.
IPS, a part of the British engineering major Invensys plc (LSE:ISYS) (London), will make a significant contribution to the program through this contract with its technological expertise in the power sector. Demand for electricity in Indonesia is slated to grow at a rate of 10% annually over the next six years. The country has to build on its power infrastructure to become self-reliant. It plans to add new capacities and generate power from cost-efficient sources, such as coal and gas, to meet increasing demand.
IPS' automation plant upgrades are expected to improve the reliability and efficiency of the existing plants, thereby increasing profit margins. It will also make the process of upgrades in the future easier. As per the DCS contract, IPS will install advanced IPS I/A Series automation infrastructure that would mean connecting more than 30,000 I/O points. The control systems will aid in controlling the new plants' equipment, such as turbines, boilers and generators. It will also help in effectively utilizing IPS' Performance Plus coordinated control system technology. These systems have been used successfully in a number of plants globally.
IPS' DCS solutions will include applications such as data acquisition systems, boiler and turbine sequence control systems, furnace safety supervisory systems, turbine digital electro-hydraulic control systems, electric control systems, feed water pump mechanical electro-hydraulic control systems and balance of plant systems for managing various operations of the plant.
The solution offered by IPS will save costs for PLN while providing technological benefits and making plant operations easier. IPS plans to introduce remote input/output in the instrument cable and marshalling. The company also plans to implement integrated asset monitoring and diagnostic system that will help PLN in performing predictive maintenance. IPS has proven worldwide that applying technology and business knowledge to plant operations can improve performance, production and value.
