The university is utilizing Sebesta Blomberg & Associates, Incorporated (Roseville, Minnesota) as the architectural and engineering firm for the $13 million project and expects the new facility to be operational by June of 2004. The initial plant will have a capacity of 4,000 tons, however, the footprint and buildings are being constructed to handle 8,000 ton's, positioning the university to meets its future chilled water needs.
The remaining 4,000 ton's worth of capacity will probably not be installed for another 8-10 years, as the university expands. If the university discovers a need for additional chilled water capacity, once they have built out the new plant to capacity, they will need to construct a totally new plant as the plant now under construction will be landlocked.
Iowa State University was chartered by the Iowa General Assembly in 1858 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm, the nation's first land-grant college, and opened its doors in 1868-69. Some Iowa State's more famous graduates are: George Washington Carver and Carrie Chapman Catt. Iowa State boasts an enrollment of over 27,000 and offers more then 100 undergraduate majors and nearly 200 fields of study leading to graduate and professional degrees.
