Iran has been facing economic sanctions for many years that made it difficult to import many products that are used in the production of various chemicals. This provided the country a chance to work on developing technologies in Iran itself.

In the last couple of years, Iran has been successful in developing indigenous technology to produce chemical catalysts that will be used in converting ethylene to polyethylene. The companies that contributed to the research and development are Petrochemical Research and Technology Company, Amir Kabir Petrochemical Company, Bakhtar Petrochemical Company and Kermanshah Polymer Company. There two catalyst projects under execution by Kermanshah Polymer Company and Lorestan Petrochemical Company that will start production by end of 2021 and mid-2022, respectively.
