Jaiprakash Power to Add 1,980 Megawatts in Uttar Pradesh

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Jaiprakash Power Ventures Limited is building a 1,980-megawatt (MW), coal-fired power project in the Karchana district of Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. This project will be in two phases: Phase I will be commissioned toward the end of second-quarter 2014 or the beginning of third-quarter 2014, and Phase II will be commissioned toward the end of second-quarter 2015. Phase I will have two 660-MW, coal-fired units, and Phase II will have one 660-MW, coal-fired unit.

Jaiprakash Power Ventures will begin construction in May 2011. Larsen & Toubro has been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for both phases of this project. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the boiler design firm for this supercritical power project.

A coal requirement of approximately 33,264 tons per day for the project is to be supplied by Northern Coal Fields Limited, and a water requirement of 6,900 cubic meters per hour will be supplied by the Yamuna River. A total of 584.95 hectares have been acquired.

For Phase I, Jaiprakash Power Ventures has signed a power purchase agreement with government of Uttar Pradesh for a supply of 90% of the power. The remaining 10% will be sold on a merchant basis. For Phase II, the company signed a power purchase agreement with the government of Uttar Pradesh for 20% of the power; the remaining 80% will be sold on a merchant basis.
