Jordan Announces Shortlisted Companies for Fujij Build-Own-Operate Project

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Jordan announced 16 companies had been shortlisted from the 33 that applied to win the Fujij 80- to 90-MW windfarm build-own-operate project.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--At the end of February, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) in Jordan announced 16 companies had been shortlisted from the 33 that applied to win the Fujij 80- to 90-MW windfarm build-own-operate (BOO) project. The shortlisted companies came from different countries and were both single entities and joint ventures.

MEMR will notify the shortlisted company that wins the prequalification stage; that company will be eligible to perform construction of the windfarm, which is 200 kilometers south of Amman, the capital of Jordan. Meanwhile, MEMR received $6 million from the World Bank-funded Global Environment Facility (GEF) to find a consultant to help in building and managing the wind power market in Jordan.

Jordan has significant wind energy resources that could be exploited for power generation. The country's wind atlas indicates that some areas in the northern and western regions of the country, which include the Fujij site, have wind speeds that exceed seven miles per second.

This project is part of Jordan's renewable energy strategy, which has several ambitious goals, including making 7% of the energy mix renewable by 2015, which is equivalent to 300 MW, and making 10% renewable by 2020, which is equivalent to 600 MW. The renewable energy will include both wind and solar.

The Fujij project has an estimated cost of $200 million, with a contract for National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) to purchase the produced energy for 20 years. Fujij was one project of two prepared tenders for BOO projects; the second project is the Al-Kamshah 30- to 40-MW windfarm, which is under negotiations for the first-ranked bidder.
