Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Kelly Springfield Tire Company (Fayetteville, North Carolina), a subsidiary of Goodyear Tire Company (NYSE:GT ) (Akron, Ohio), has completed an expansion of its Fayetteville, North Carolina tire manufacturing plant.
This project was formally announced by Kelly Springfield two months after the company had announced plans to invest $17.7 million for various plant improvement projects to modernize existing operations and add larger diameter tires to its product line.
The new production equipment increased the plants capability to produce tires for its Kelly-Springfield flagship brand and its custom brand accounts. A new 200,000 square-foot Butler building, with 30-foot high ceilings, was added to handle the increased production capacity from the installation of new equipment and efficiently handle the storage and distribution operations. The building was designed by Cleveland, Ohio-based HWH Architects Engineers Planners, Incorporated and constructed by James N Gray Construction (Lexington, Kentucky). Construction began in late 2004 and was completed in September 2005.
Kelly-Springfields Fayetteville plant is the largest tire plant in the world. Approximately 66,000 tires are produced each day at the two million square-foot facility located on a 400-acre site. Almost 500 different types of tires are manufactured at this plant, which is the only plant in the country capable of producing so many variations of tires.
Goodyear was founded as The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1898 by Frank Seilberling. The company began production with thirteen employees on November 21, 1898, in a converted strawboard factory on the banks of the Little Cuyahoga River in Akron, Ohio. The worlds largest rubber company began its journey by producing bicycle and carriage tires, horseshoe pads and poke chips. Today, Goodyear has sales in excess of $18 billion. Goodyear operates over 90 manufacturing plants in 28 countries and employs over 80,000 people around the world.
