Kentucky's Proposed Generation Indicates that Coal is Still King
Environmentalists have more than 2,000 MW of the coal generation projects tied up in litigation, and about 3,900 MW of coal integrated gasification ...

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Developers proposing up to 8,500 megawatts (MW) of new generation in Kentucky are looking heavily at coal. If all projects are constructed, this would increase generation capacity by 38%, raising the state's capacity from 22,255 MW to about 31,000 MW. Planned generation unit additions will use coal technologies as the primary fuel by natural gas followed by hydroelectric, wind and landfill gas units.
About 87.75% of the new generation in Kentucky being developed is composed of 20 coal-technology-fueled generation units for more than 7,400 MW. Natural gas generation comes in a distant second with plans for 580 MW of new capacity, or 6.8%. Hydropower comes in third with 360 MW, or about 4.2% of the generation being developed.
