Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Keyera Corporation (Calgary, Alberta) is trying to keep a steady ship as wildfires and global factors weigh on Canada's Oil & Gas Industry. Despite having to temporarily close a few of its natural gas-production facilities amid Canada's recent wildfires, which caused its throughput volumes to dip when compared with the same period last year, the company is maintaining its capital investment outlook and insists its priorities remain unchanged. Industrial Info is tracking more than US$2.7 billion worth of active and proposed projects from Keyera, the bulk of which is attributed to natural gas liquid (NGL) pipelines.

Keyera reaffirmed, in a quarterly earnings-related press release, that its growth capital expenditures for full-year 2023 will range between C$200 million (US$148.9 million) and C$240 million (US$178.7 million). Maintenance capital expenditures, however, are now expected to range between C$95 million (US$70.74 million) and C$105 million (US$78.18 million), an increase of about C$20 million (US$14.89 million), which is attributed partly to higher-than-expected maintenance costs at its natural gas complex at the Pipestone Field near Grand Prairie, Alberta, which is operated and managed by Pipestone Energy Corporation (Calgary).
The Pipestone complex is the hub for much of Keyera's heaviest ongoing investments, including the Key Access Pipeline System (KAPS), which began construction toward the end of 2022. KAPS is expected to carry up to 130,000 barrels per day (BBL/d) of mixed NGLs about 175 miles from an NGL pump station at the complex, also under construction, to a fractionation and storage facility in Fort Saskatchewan. Other KAPS pump-station projects that kicked off at the end of last year include the Wapiti Pump Station in Grovedale and the Simonette Pump Station near Valleyview.
Keyera currently expects to finish construction on these components of KAPS toward the end of 2024. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Oil & Gas Pipeline Project Database can read detailed project reports on the main KAPS line and the Pipestone, Wapiti and Simonette pump stations.
Keyera also is seeking permits to expand its sour gas-processing plant at the Pipestone complex from 38,000 to 62,000 BBL/d of condensate-processing capacity. The company believes the expansion will support its 20-year infrastructure and midstream service agreement with Ovintiv Incorporated (NYSE:OVV) (Calgary), formerly known as Encana, to develop assets in Montney-Duvernay Shale. Subscribers can learn more about the proposal in a detailed project report.
"KAPS integrates our value chain, makes us more competitive, and enhances our ability to attract new volumes," the company said in its quarterly press release. "Our platform offers customers a much-needed competitive alternative from wellhead to end market."
Just to the south of the KAPS origin point near Grand Prairie, Keyera's 120 million-standard-cubic-foot-per-day compressor station services the Eastern Block of the Pipestone Field. Pipestone and contractor Precision Drilling Corporation (NYSE:PDS) (PDC) (Calgary) began drilling 11 new wells earlier this year, with more planned for 2024. Subscribers can read detailed project reports on the 2023 and 2024 drilling programs, and find more information in Industrial Info's August 3, 2023, article - Strathcona Buys Pipestone, Joins Canada's Top Five Producers.
Keyera's other drilling programs in Alberta include the Wapiti Natural Gas & Oil Field near Grand Prairie, in which operator and manager Paramount Resources Limited (Calgary) and contractor Fox Drilling Incorporated (Lethbridge, Alberta) are drilling 23 wells through the end of 2023, with Paramount planning between 20 and 25 for 2024. Subscribers can read detailed project reports on the 2023 and 2024 drilling programs.
In May, Keyera was forced to temporarily close and evacuate six natural gas plants as a precaution amid Canada's wildfires. Industrial Info is tracking progress at these six plants, all of which were reopened as of mid-June:
