Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Kinder Morgan Incorporated (KMI)(NYSE:KMI)(Houston) is one of the largest midstream companies in the U.S. It owns and operates crude, products, natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGL), and carbon dioxide (CO2) pipelines and terminals across the U.S. and Canada. In July 2013, Kinder Morgan sold off the Pony Express Pipeline asset to Tallgrass Energy Partners (TEP) (Overland Park, Kansas). This project was aimed at transporting Bakken crude oil from North Dakota to Cushing, Oklahoma, and then on to Gulf Coast refiners. According to IIR data, KMI does not have any other projects in the works in the Bakken play.
Recent project activity for Kinder Morgan is centered heavily on developing strengths; mainly natural gas, NGL, and CO2 infrastructure. The company's focus on NGL entails KMI's drive to supply Canadian oil sands producers with condensate for use as diluent. One of KMI's biggest undertakings is the reversal of the Cochin pipeline, which would be a direct link to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. From there multiple pipelines such as the planned Norlite diluent pipeline by Enbridge Incorporated (ENB) (NYSE:ENB)(Calgary, Canada) would carry the diluent to the producers further north. The Cochin pipeline would carry 95,000 barrels per day (b/d) of condensate from Illinois to Fort Saskatchewan.
Cochin would compete with Enbridge's Southern Lights pipeline, which can transport up to 180,000 b/d to Edmonton. To the southwest, Kinder Morgan is also focusing on building out CO2 infrastructure in Arizona and New Mexico. In 2009 the St. John's Dome, situated on the border of Arizona and New Mexico, was found to contain large reserves of CO2. Kinder Morgan plans to start construction on a gathering system in the area within the year to harvest this gas, and transport it to west Texas for use in enhanced oil recovery wells in the Permian Basin. These new reserves are estimated to be able to flow at up to 200 million cubic feet per day.
