Lafayette Utilities System Completes Construction of 90-Megawatt Peaking Plant

Construction for the plant started in September 2004 and was completed in April 2005. Full commercial operation is scheduled to begin this month. The project consists of two 45-megawatt natural gas-fired GE Power Systems LM6000PC SPRINT combustion turbine generators that will operate in a simple-cycle peaking configuration, producing power when power demands are at their highest (during the summer and winter months). Labbe will also feature synchronous condensing capability to ensure the supply of reactive power to support transmission and emergency black-start generating capabilities in the event of tropical storms or hurricane-related outages.
