Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New Mexico is transitioning to renewable energy in a big way. Of the $5.6 billion in projects under construction that Industrial Info is tracking in the state, more than $3.3 billion worth are for wind and solar projects. Other industries making a strong showing in the state include Oil & Gas Pipelines and Petroleum Refining.
Click on the image at right for a breakdown by industry of industrial projects under construction in New Mexico.
Among the wind power projects is Riverstone Holdings LLC's (New York, New York) Red Cloud Windfarm near Corona and Pattern Energy Group LP's (San Francisco, California) Clines Corner Windfarm in Clines Corner, about 60 miles east of Albuquerque. The Red Cloud Windfarm will use 124 2.8-megawatt (MW) turbines to generate more than 340 MW. Construction began about a year ago and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The 324-MW Clines Corner Windfarm will use 116 turbines. Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services for both projects. Solar power projects in New Mexico are less numerous and include Centaurus Energy Limited Partnership's (Houston, Texas) 300-MW Arroyo solar project near Crownpoint, about 130 miles northwest of Albuquerque. The facility is being built at the site of a coal-fired power plant that is planned to stop generating next year. It will use approximately 1 million single-tracking solar panels and is planned to begin operating next summer. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
The Pipelines Industry ranks second in regard to the value of projects underway in the state. This is largely due to Summit Midstream's (Atlanta, Georgia) Double E Pipeline project, which will deliver natural gas from points in New Mexico and Texas to the Waha Hub in Texas. The largest section of line is an 82-mile stretch from Eddy County, New Mexico, to the New Mexico-Texas border near Loving. The pipeline will be able to transport up to 1.4 billion cubic feet per day. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pipeline Project Database can click here for related project reports.
In Artesia, New Mexico, HollyFrontier Corporation (Dallas, Texas) is underway with a renewable diesel hydrotreater addition at its 100,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Navajo Refinery. The 9,000-BBL/d unit will convert soybean and vegetable oils and tallow to renewable hydrogenated diesel. The unit is expected to begin operating in the first quarter of next year. Seemingly no state is without at least one project from e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), and New Mexico is no exception. In Albuquerque, the company is underway with Project Chico, a grassroot fulfillment center that will be five stories and encompass 2.58 million square feet. Construction kicked off early last year and is expected to wrap up in fourth-quarter 2021. According to local media, New Mexico currently is the only state in the U.S. southwest without a fulfillment center, and mostly relies on facilities in Phoenix, Arizona, and Denver, Colorado.
