Linde Gas Delays Startup of Grassroot Plant in New York

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Linde Gas North America LLC (Murray Hill, New Jersey), a subsidiary of Linde AG (ETR:LIN) (Munich, Germany), has been planning and constructing a grassroot carbon dioxide (CO2) plant in Fulton, New York, since at least 2004. Mechanical construction of the new plant was finished earlier this year, and the commercial startup has been delayed numerous times.

This plant was built in conjunction with a brownfield alternative energy plant owned by Northeast Biofuels (Syracuse, New York) where the CO2 will be produced as a byproduct and piped to the neighboring Linde plant to be used as feedstock. Due to the financial troubles and the economic climate, Northeast Biofuels put the alternative energy plant on-hold as the company completes bankruptcy proceedings.

As Northeast Biofuels emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Sunoco Incorporated (NYSE:SUN) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) acquired the partially completed alternative energy plant. Sunoco hopes to continue retrofitting the plant and complete the conversion to ethanol by the middle of 2010.

Until Sunoco completes the planned capital improvements on the plant, the Linde Gas plant will sit shuttered, waiting for feedstock to come its way.
