Merck Focuses on Future with Opening of $100 Million Boston Research Center

In a sea of bad press over the Vioxx recall (see related October 4, 2004, article - Vioxx Market Withdrawal Giving Merck a Huge Pain in the Profit), Merck & Company, Inc (NYSE: MRK) (Whitehouse Station, New Jersey) is finally able to announce some good news, as they open a major North American research center in Boston, Massachusetts. Located on the campus of Emmanuel College, the Center features twelve stories above ground and six stories below. When fully staffed, it will house about 500 employees. Scientists working in its labs will focus on finding treatments for cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and obesity. The facility is Merck’s eleventh major research center, worldwide.

As reported by Industrialinfo.com in 2002, (see related March 5, 2002 news article - Merck Goes Back to School with $100 Million Research Center in Boston), Bovis Lend Lease (New York, New York) handled construction management for the $100 million project, which began construction in 2001. The new center is named for Ed Scolnick, M.D, an internationally recognized biomedical researcher and former president of Merck Research Laboratories (MRL), where he led efforts that introduced 29 new medicines and vaccines. Dr. Scolnick is currently the director the Psychiatric Disease Initiative at the Broad Institute (Boston, Massachusetts).
