Researched by Industrial Info Resources (New Delhi, India)--Egyptian refining major Middle East Oil Refinery (MIDOR) (Cairo, Egypt) has planned a major maintenance and inspection turnaround at its Alexandria refinery in Egypt. The 40-day turnaround is scheduled to begin in August 2012.
The major work to be carried out in the 100,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) refinery involves tray replacement, reactor maintenance, cleaning of the heat exchanger, catalyst changeover, heater pigging and platformer maintenance. The overall cost of the turnaround has been pegged at $18 million.
According to company sources, the crude distillation unit, diesel hydrotreater, delayed coker, hydrocracker, naphtha hydrotreater, platformer unit and the sulfur-recovery unit are slated for a complete turnaround.
In addition, various other associated units, such as the amine treatment unit, the tail-gas treating unit, isomerization unit, vacuum distillation unit, Kero merox unit and with the light ends recovery unit may also undergo a major turnaround. Apart from the maintenance and inspection program, a major upgrade for the coker fractionator and reactor has also been planned.
The Alexandria Refinery is situated in the Amreya Refinery Free Zone. Classified as a deep conversion refinery, it is designed to transform a variety of crudes, including the lower-quality heavy sour crudes into higher-value products. The refinery uses the latest scientific and technological methods to suit the fluctuating market needs. It can also process a wide range of crude oil and various crude blends. The deep conversion process aids the transformation of low-value, heavy products like gasoil, into high-quality middle and light distillate products.
In order to support the Egyptian national economy, MIDOR's scope of activities has been extended in the last few years to include trading activities such as purchasing and selling crude oil, refined products and petroleum derivatives locally and internationally. The MIDOR refinery mixes and blends petroleum products and has storage facilities for crude, refined products and fully manufactured petroleum derivatives.
