Mohawk Industries Awards General Contract for $33 Million Expansion in Georgia

Mohawk Industries Incorporated (NYSE:MHK ) (Calhoun, Georgia), manufacturer of woven and tufted carpet and rugs, has selected Fox & Brindle Construction Company (Calhoun, Georgia) to provide general construction services for a $33 Million expansion in Calhoun, Georgia.

Plans are to construct two large-scale facilities totaling 1.3 million square feet, near the company's existing distribution center, in order to expand manufacturing and distribution operations. The expansion will consist of new assembly and distribution areas, and create 125 new jobs and retain 485 jobs.

Mohawk is also planning a $70 million expansion of its Bennettsville, South Carolina, plant. Mohawk plans to build a new yarn manufacturing plant adjacent to its Bennettsville location to complement the existing Oak River plant. The new plant is expected to be operational by the fall of 2005 and will create 300 new jobs

Mohawk Industries, headquartered in Calhoun, Georgia, has been in the textile industry for 120 years. It is considered to be the second-largest maker of commercial and residential carpets and rugs in the United States (after Shaw Industries) and one of the largest carpet makers in the world. It produces woven and tufted broadloom carpets and rugs under names such as Mohawk, Aladdin, Durkan, Karastan, and Bigelow. The company sells its wares to more than 34,000 customers, including carpet retailers, home centers, mass merchandisers, department stores, and dealers. It currently employs over 18,000 people.
