Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Despite continuing uncertainties about consumer sentiment and the overall economy, the construction of distribution centers and warehouses throughout the U.S. remains reasonably strong. Industrial Info is tracking more than 30 warehouse and distribution center projects that are currently under construction in the U.S. The projects have a total investment value of $1.2 billion.
Click on image at right for a breakdown by market region of warehouse and distribution center projects under construction in the U.S.The Mid-Atlantic market region leads the U.S. in this type of project, with 10 warehouse/distribution center projects under way, worth a combined $375 million. One of the largest such projects in the region is Macy's Incorporated's (NYSE:M) (Cincinnati, Ohio) $150 million distribution center that is being constructed in Martinsburg, West Virginia, by H+M Construction Company (Jackson, Tennessee). The project began construction in 2011 and is scheduled to be completed during the second quarter of this year. The distribution center is 1.3 million square feet, and once the distribution center is open, Macy's expects to employ 1,200 full-time workers and an additional 700 seasonal workers. The 1.3 million-square-foot distribution center will be responsible for fulfilling online orders for the eastern United States.
While the Mid-Atlantic region leads for this type of construction, the Southeast region is not far behind with $331 million in warehouse/distribution center projects under construction. The high number is thanks to Lowe's Companies Incorporated's (NYSE:LOW) (Mooresville, North Carolina) $125 million, 1.4 million-square-foot distribution center, which is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2013.
While the reasons for constructing distribution centers and warehouse facilities are varied, ranging from high gas prices to regional growth, the fact that these companies are already constructing $1.2 billion of these projects, with more set to kick off in the future, suggests some degree of optimism for continued sales and distribution of goods in the future.
