Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $43.8 billion in industrial capital and maintenance projects that are set to kick off from now through 2016 in the Northeastern U.S. and New England.
Abundant natural gas from Marcellus Shale wells in Pennsylvania are responsible for much of the activity, particularly in the Power Industry, as developers seek to take advantage of the inexpensive fuel available in the region, particularly as environmental legislation continues to force the closure of older, less efficient coal-fired power plants. Industrial Info is tracking 34 capital projects valued at $12.4 billion at natural gas-fired power plants in the region that are set to kick off from now through 2016. These include grassroot construction, unit additions and repowers. Most of this spending is destined for New York and Pennsylvania.
The largest of these projects is the 1,002-megawatt (MW) Cricket Valley Energy Center in Dover, New York, which is about 80 miles north of Manhattan. The project has an estimated total investment value of $1.4 billion and could kick off in early 2016, taking approximately three years to complete. In Jessup, Pennsylvania, initial construction on Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) 1,300-MW Lackawanna Energy Center is expected to begin this year, although as with other large, new-build facilities of this nature, the project is facing headwinds regarding zoning and other permissions.

Projects range in size from the placement of relatively small lateral pipelines to Sunoco Logistics Partners LP's (NYSE:SXL) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Mariner East II pipeline project, which will carry natural gas liquids (NGLs) from Ohio and western Pennsylvania across the state to the company's Marcus Hook industrial complex near the Pennsylvania-Delaware-New Jersey border.
Always a major player in the region, the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry boasts more than 100 capital and maintenance projects that are set to kick off in the New England and Northeast regions through 2016, with New York and Massachusetts boasting combined Pharma-Biotech project start values of more than $1 billion during this time. These projects include a wide range of research, manufacturing and distribution facilities and are a key component to the economic development in the area.
