Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Chinas National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) recently announced on its website that it has approved Degussa (China) Company Limiteds methacrylate integrated project in an effort to improve the production and technology level of methacrylate in the country and to also meet the demand of the related industry. The project will be located at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park and is expected to be the largest of its kind in China, with an investment of $260 million.
Methacrylate is the general description of specialty chemicals, including methyl methacrylate (MMA), which is mainly used to produce polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), plastic, lubricants, bonds, PVC resin modification, auxiliary processing additives and finishing mixtures for textiles.
Companies currently manufacturing MMA in China not only have small production capacity and variety, but also use the acetone cyanohydrin process. A process using C4 as raw material has only been adopted by one joint venture. Compared to acetone cyanohydrin, C4 has many advantages such as a broad raw material source, simplified process, low energy consumption, less by-product, less pollution and higher safety.
Degussa (China) Company Limited was established by Degussa (China) Investment Company Limited in September 2004, and is a subsidiary of Degussa AG (Frankfurt, Germany), which is principally engaged in the production of specialty chemicals. The company has designed the projects with annual production capacity of 9,000 tons of polyester and 8,500 tons of color paste. A 3,665-ton organic peroxide project is presently under construction. The newly approved project will adopt the process route with C4 as raw material to have integrated production with MMA and methacrylate as raw material.
Industrial Info first began tracking this project when it was in site study in October 2005. Industrial Info tracts Chemical Processing Industry projects worldwide as part of its International Project Database.
