Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) (Columbus, Nebraska), a state owned utility, is growing with a mixture of natural gas/oil, wind, and coal to maintain a well balanced fuel system for its power generation assets.

Currently, NPPD has a mixture of coal, hydroelectric, nuclear, natural gas, oil, and wind. The company is developing 675 MW of additional generation capacity or a 26.8% increase in total generation through 2010.

NPPD is currently constructing a 250 megawatt (MW) natural gas/oil-fired combined-cycle power station (PEC 34000471) representing a 9.25% increase in generation capacity. Construction of the station began in May of 2003 and is due for completion and operation in the spring of 2005. The Beatrice project (PLANT 1057483) is being built near the town of Beatrice in Gage County, Nebraska. NPPD selected The Industrial Company (TIC) (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) and Utility Engineering (UE) (Omaha, Nebraska), a division of Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) to construct the plant. TIC/UE are installing two General Electric (GE) natural gas/oil-fired combustion turbine/generator sets (MS7001EA), each with a duct-fired Vogt International heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), whose combined steam drives an Alstom steam turbine/generator set. The plant is to be connected with NPPD 115kV transmission system. The station is also being built for $209 million, which is $32 million, less than the original $241 million that was originally planned.

The company is also constructing a 75 MW windfarm (PEC 34000444) representing a 2.75% increase in generation capacity. A third project, a grassroot 400 MW coal-fired power plant (PEC 34000464) (14.8%), is planned for the future.
