New Beef Packing Plant Would Attract New Jobs and Support Businesses to South Dakota

Start-up beef packing venture, Northern Beef Packers (Aberdeen, South Dakota), is in the final stages of pre-construction activity for the creation of a new beef packing plant to be located in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and also has the potential to bring new jobs and beef industry-related downstream companies to the area.

Northern Beef is waiting for the final building permits to be approved and plans to start construction on the $50 million plant by November of 2006. Plans call for the construction of a 180,000 square-foot building and installation of slaughtering and processing equipment to slaughter up to 1,500 head of South Dakota Certified beef. Cattle with this certification program must be born in South Dakota and remain in the state until slaughtered.

Breukelman Busch & Associates, LLC (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) is providing engineering drawings for the project and will also act as the construction manager for the equipment installation portions of the project. Local construction outfit Kyburz-Carlson Construction Company (Aberdeen, South Dakota) will be responsible for erecting the building.

The plant will also bring in additional industry such as a rendering plant, a beef processing plant to further process and fabricate as well as a hide cleaning plant and a blood-testing lab.

Site work is scheduled to start in November, however, the building construction portion will not start until after the New Year. The plant is expected to be processing cattle by late first quarter of 2008.
