Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New project activity for the Food & Beverage Industry reported by Industrial Info for June 2012 was down compared to the previous month in terms of project counts, but expenditures were up and moved past the $1 billion mark. June saw 76 new projects versus 84 for May, and expenditures of $1.18 billion compared to $871 million. Capital expenditures tallied 64 projects worth approximately $1.06 billion, while maintenance expenditures were a mere $12 million spread across 12 projects.
Projects listed in the planning stages accounted for 46 projects worth $883 million, while expenditures in the approval and engineering phase showed 17 projects valued at $263 million. Two projects that were first identified in the construction phase have opportunities for quotes and bid documents well into the third quarter.
Planned investments in the U.S. were approximately $1.1 billion from 73 projects, while Canada had three projects worth $3 million.
In terms of grassroot construction projects, there were 13 projects that had a combined value of $615 million. Grassroot construction activity for the previous month was just more than $188 million to build eight new plants and distribution centers.
Most of the new project activity reported was concentrated in the Great Lakes region, with 15 projects totaling $243 million.
Plans to build a $325 million soup manufacturing plant in San Antonio, Texas, were the largest of the 76 new projects reported by Industrial Info for June 2012. The project entails a 500,000-square-foot building on a 60-acre site with construction scheduled to start later this year and completion slated for January 2014.
Industrial Info's database of active capital and maintenance expenditures in the North American Food and Beverage Industry and the Global Sugar Processing Industry has current expenditures of $26.6 billion and more than 1,400 projects.
