New Hampshire Utility Proceeds with Conversion of Power Unit from Coal to Wood Fired

Public Service Company of New Hampshire (PSNH) (Manchester, New Hampshire), a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities System (NYSE:NU ) (Hartford, Connecticut), is having Alstom Power (Windsor, Connecticut), a subsidiary of Alstom SA (OTC:ALSGY ) (Paris, France) replace the 1955 vintage unit 05 coal-fired boiler, with a state-of-the-art technology wood-fired boiler to reduce emissions as part of a $75 million renewable energy project and life extension project.

Official construction on the unit 05 new wood-fired boiler started October 15, 2004, and is expected to be completed and tied-in with the Siemens Westinghouse steam turbine/generator in the summer of 2006. Once the new boiler is complete, the company will look at dismantling the old boiler. The new wood-fired boiler is projected to burn 400,000 tons per year of wood chips and will reduce emissions by 380,000 tons per year.

The new boiler will allow one addition of one employee for the wood handling and preparation. The local economy should get a boost of about $20 million per year. PSNH will also reap additional benefits of being able to sell Renewable Energy Credits (REC) to companies in Connecticut and Massachusetts, as well as in New Hampshire.
