New Kalona Creamery to Process Organic Milk for Iowa's Amish Farmers

The newly formed Kalona Creamery located in Wellman, Iowa located about 36 miles south of Cedar Rapids, will be able to process about 25,000 gallons of milk a week initially. The organic milk will be marketed and sold through local distributors like Hy-Vee Foods, a small area supermarket chain.

Building construction on the 9,000 square foot dairy is currently underway and once all of the processing and packaging equipment is installed, Kalona Creamery expects to be in the new dairy by June 2003 processing milk. Adams other business venture, CJN Adams Corporation has been aiding area Amish products reach markets outside of the local area for about seven years.

The organic milk market has grown some 20% since the early 1990's however, many Amish were looking to exit the dairy industry. With this new dairy in place, some 36 Amish farmers in the area will supply milk for the dairy and add value to current milk production. Milk produced at the Creamery will have no antibiotics and will be homogenized at a lower temperature than traditional dairies.
