Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New Mexico currently has 7,650 megawatts (MW) of operational power generation, of which only a little over 7%, or 556 MW, is renewable energy. Developers are hoping to add another 3,310 MW of generating capacity by mid-2013, bringing the total to 10,960 MW, an increase of about 43%. Of the new power generation, 1,214 MW would be renewable, increasing renewable generation over 218% to 1,770 MW, making renewable power generation about 16.1% of New Mexico's total generating capacity.

Coal, which already plays a large part of the current power generation, will supply an additional 1,500 MW or 45.3% of the new generation. Desert Rock Energy Company LLC (Houston, Texas), a wholly-owned subsidiary of privately-owned Sithe Global Power LLC (New York, New York), and Dine Power Authority, an enterprise of the Navajo Nation, plan to construct and operate two supercritical 750-MW units at the Desert Rock Power Project in San Juan County, New Mexico.

Wind energy would be the next largest source of new power with the addition of about 1,200 MW over nine windfarms.
