Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Fifteen new plants began some phase of commercial operation and start-up during the first four months of this year in the Southwest Market region of the United States. These plants were spread across six industries and provided an estimated 1,275 new job opportunities for the region. The first four months of 2007 had a nearly duplicate performance with 17 new plants beginning operation. Considering the number of obstacles that have risen in the market over the past year, such as the record-high prices for crude oil, volatile feedstock and natural gas costs, maintaining the level of new plant start-ups is impressive.
The Alternative Fuels Industry has made big contributions during recent years toward investments in grassroot construction in the region. This year, three new plants valued at more than $300 million in total investment value (TIV) already have begun operations, including two ethanol plant and one biodiesel plant. The Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry has also contributed new start-ups this year already providing the greatest number of new jobs estimated at nearly 570.
Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, 130 more plants are either planned or under construction that have the potential to begin operation during 2008. The greatest number of those individual plant locations could be compressor stations in the Oil & Gas Transmission Industry with 36 potential plant sites. The region stands to gain 18 more plants from the Power Industry this year. Historically, a greater number of plants than the available amount of energy contracts are planned in this industry segment leading to a large number of cancellations or delays in construction. At least 19 planned grassroot power plants originally proposed to start up this year have been canceled or put on hold. In total, across all of the industries tracked by Industrial Info as part of it North American Plant Database, 36 grassroot plants originally planned to begin operation this year have been canceled.
The Southwest Region is home to nearly 4,500 operational industrial plant sites and the greatest concentration of petrochemical and refining plants in the country. As new plants come online, important operational details about each plant location including physical addresses, driving maps, product descriptions, and much more is available online as part of Industrial Info's Southwest Online Plant Directory.
