Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The New Post Creek Hydro Station, which is located in Cochrane, Ontario, began commercial operations late last month following its completion by Ontario Power Generation Incorporated.
The 27-megawatt (MW) facility is a run-of-river hydropower plant that diverts water 250 meters from New Post Creek through a penstock, to a power house on the nearby Abitibi River. The remaining water will continue to flow to New Post Creek's waterfall.
The new hydro powerhouse utilizes a pair of Andritz Horizontal Compact Francis hydro turbine generators to create renewable, low-cost and reliable electricity to the provincial grid, enough to power 25,000 homes.
The project, which is located in the northeastern part of Ontario, had a total investment value of $300 million and engaged Kiewit Corporation (Omaha, Nebraska) as the engineering, procurement and construction firm. The project started construction in spring of 2015 and took a little more than two years to achieve commercial operations. Ontario Power Generation Incorporated will operate and maintain the facility.
