New York Power Plant in Final Stages of Bringing Unit Back to Service

The unit, which went offline last September for a major turbine overhaul, was initially scheduled to return back in December and is now in its final stages of repair --maybe.

During the scheduled maintenance activities last year, a crack was discovered on the unit's rotor caused by a low pressure seal leak. That discovery extended the outage to nearly seven months, and plant workers are pining to get it back into service. "We've been on that thing so long it's getting old. It should be back by the 15th or 16th, and that's not soon enough."

The Astoria station is owned and operated by Astoria Generating Company LP (Astoria). The facility became operational in 1953 and now has a maximum generating capacity of nearly 1,350 megawatts. The plant's three other generators (Units 2, 3 and 5) have remained operational for almost the whole duration of Unit 4's outage, with only minor planned maintenance bringing any of the units off the power grid.
