Newfoundland Poised to Install Mega-Hydroelectric Plants to Meet Upcoming Electrical Needs

Both of the projects will be upstream from the world’s largest underground powerhouse

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). There is over $6 billion worth of mega-hydroelectric projects being studied in Newfoundland and Labrador to meet upcoming power requirements by 2013. The area may need to add at least 2,800 megawatts (MW) to meet future energy needs. The province has identified projects at Gull Island, where a $4 billion, 2,000 MW plant is needed, and Muskrat Falls, where a $2 billion, 800 MW plant is required. Both of the projects will be upstream from the world’s largest underground powerhouse and ninth largest hydroelectric powerhouse, as well as Canada’s largest powerhouse, Churchill Falls, a 5,400 MW facility. The addition of these two hydroelectric plants will bring the Churchill Falls development to over 8,200 MW.

Several utility groups are looking at participating in this project including Hydro One (Toronto, Ontario), Hydro Quebec (Montreal, Quebec), and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Saint John’s, Newfoundland). Construction for the two projects is currently planned to commence in 2007 for Gull Island, and 2009 for Muskrat Falls. Completion of the hydroelectric facilities is targeted for 2013.
