Newmont Mining Seeks Skilled Craftsmen for New Coal-Fired Power Plant Under Construction in Nevada

Currently, there are 650 craftsmen working on the open shop project, but the contractor will require 150 more craftsmen during peak construction and installation of the turbine this summer.

Released Monday, March 19, 2007

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The world’s largest gold miner, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM)(Denver, Colorado) is constructing a new 200-megawatt (MW) power plant on the 25,000-acre TS Ranch property near Battle Mountain, Nevada. Known as the TS Power Project, Newmont Mining is utilizing Fluor Enterprises, Incorporated, a subsidiary of Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas), as the engineering and construction contractor. Fluor is 50% complete with construction as of March 2007. Commercial start-up for the plant is scheduled for June 2008.

Currently, there are 650 craftsmen working on the open shop project, but the contractor will require 150 more craftsmen during peak construction and installation of the turbine this summer. The labor market in the area has been tight with resources few and far between, and Fluor is actively seeking qualified skilled craftsmen, mainly boilermakers, pipe fitters, and boiler tube welders to boost craftsmen on site up to 800.

The power plant is being built to supply power to Newmont’s gold mining operations in the area. The project will include a Babcock & Wilcox pulverized coal boiler and a 200 MW Toshiba steam turbine/generator. About 920,000 tons per year of coal will be delivered to the plant via rail from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. Coal handling expert Roberts & Schaefer Company (Salt Lake City, Utah) is supplying a turnkey coal handling system for the project. The $450 million TS Power Project is currently the fifth-largest Metals & Minerals Industry project under construction in the U.S.
