Nicaragua's Momotombo Geothermal Plant Running at 30% of Total Capacity
Unit 1, manufactured by Franco Tosi, is out of service, although it is available for backup when the other 35-MW turbine is out of work for maintenance.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Momotombo geothermal plant, which is located 40 kilometers east of Nicaragua's Leon City, is running at less than 30% of total capacity because of the lack of steam coming from the wells. The owner of the facilities, Ormat Momotombo, is awaiting government approval to drill more wells by the end of the year to boost production.
The plant was founded in August 1983 with the name Patricio Arguello Ryan and was privatized in 1999 by Ormat Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:ORA) (Reno, Nevada) one of the top five geothermal energy companies in the world. Momotombo is equipped with two 35-megawatt (MW) steam turbines manufactured by Italian firm Franco Tosi Mecanica and one Marelli generator, operating in a flash geothermal system. Apart from that, Momotombo has two 3.5-MW Ormat Turboexpanders fueled by propane gas.
Unit 1, manufactured by Franco Tosi, is out of service, although it is available for backup when the other 35-MW turbine is out of work for maintenance. Unit 2 is producing at 75% of total capacity.
Ormat is a world leader in the geothermal power sector. It supplies geothermal and recovered energy power generating equipment of its own design and manufacture, and complete power plants incorporating its equipment on a turnkey basis. In Latin America, Ormas has three plants: Momotombo in Nicaragua and other two in Guatemala, Zunil and Amatitlan.
