Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Four companies will join the list of more than 20 foreign firms that will undertake mining this year in Nigeria.

Mohammad Amate, the director general of the Nigerian Cadastre Office, said that the four companies, all with Nigerian registered entities, would begin mining for gold and iron ore in the Kebbi, Osun and Kogi states. Mines Geotechniques Nig Limited, an Australian firm, and Northern Numero Resources Limited (U.K.) were granted licenses to mine gold in the Kebbi state. Two other Australian companies--Segilola Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of RTG Mining (Subiaco, Australia), and KCM Mining Limited--will mine gold in Osun state and iron ore in Kogi. The companies have completed exploration programs in approved areas.

Amate said KCM began exploration about four years ago in Kogi and completed exploration in 2013 after identifying 500 million tons of iron ore. Segilola Nigeria had completed exploration programs in Osun, where it had identified more than 1 million ounces of gold.

Amate said that other companies from Canada, the U.K., Italy, China, Niger, India, South Africa and Ukraine intend to mine in Nigeria, and were at various levels of exploration. He added that the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development put the policies in place to encourage investment in the solid minerals sector.

The mining companies are expected to employ a good number of Nigerians. "We insist that any company that wants to pick up a license must employ qualified Nigerians--and the companies are complying," Amate said.

He said that Nigeria is the only country in Africa that had all of its geological data generated through airborne geophysical surveys, which were performed through the sustainable management of mineral resources programs.
