Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Indian power major NTPC Limited and state utility Uttar Pradesh Rajya Utpadan Nigam (UPRUNL) Limited have begun construction on a 1,320-megawatt (MW) supercritical thermal power project. The power plant would include two coal-based units of 660 megawatts (MW) each and would be in Kohrarghat village in Allahabad district, Uttar Pradesh. Leveling work is in progress at the site.
Earlier, NTPC and UPRUNL created a joint venture company, Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited (MUVNPL), for the execution of this project, and they hold equal equity in the project. As per the agreement, MUVPNL will be involved in this project on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis. The project would be built on about 2,500 acres of land. The water requirement for the project is about 65 cusecs, and it will be obtained from the Ganges River. The coal requirement for the project has been estimated about 7.38 million tons per year, out of which the company has received approval for the allocation of 5.49 million tons per year from South Eastern Coalfields Limited. MUVNPL is in discussions with the Ministry of Power regarding the needed coal allocation to ensure optimum utilization of the upcoming power plant.
At present, Uttar Pradesh has a power demand of about 7,500 MW, and nearly 6,500 MW is available, out of which about 3,500 MW is imported from other states. The state has the current installed capacity of about 4,500 MW from the existing power plants, against which about 3,000 MW is being generated. The state faces close to a 40% shortage, considering demand and the power generated from its own power plants. The state government's utmost priority is to be self-sufficient in the power sector, and this project is a part of the same endeavor. The state would be allocated 75% of the power generated from this project, and considering the 90% plant-load factor, it would be about 900 MW.
MUVNPL recently awarded the contract for the steam turbine and generators to Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator Private Limited, under an international competitive bidding mechanism. Mechanical construction for the project is expected to commence in July 2011. The state-of-the-art, 1,320-MW thermal power plant requires $2.01 billion in investments, and the first unit is expected to be commissioned by June 2015. The project is expected to be completed by December 2015, with commissioning of the second unit.
