Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Two nuclear power generation units additions being studied for installation at the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Station in Homestead, Florida, have pushed Dade County to the top of list of counties with active industrial projects in Florida. Based on projects scheduled to begin construction in 2009 or beyond, the total investment value for industrial projects in Dade County, which has 23 projects totaling $25 billion, is greater than any other county in the state. Only Duval County, anchored by Jacksonville industry in the northeastern part of the state, and Hillsborough County, located in central-western Florida, had more individual projects, with 28 and 25 projects, respectively. However, the combined total investment value for industrial projects in these two counties is only $2.2 billion compared to Dade County's $25 billion.

The planned Unit 6 and Unit 7 additions would each add between 1,100 and 1,520 megawatts and have a combined $18 billion price tag to engineer, equip and construct. In addition to the two unit additions, Florida Power & Light is planning more than $800 million in uprates, upgrades, refueling and outages at plants in Dade County.
Known mainly as a vacation destination because of sunny weather and beaches, Miami-Dade County has a surprising number of industrial projects under development. In addition to the Florida Power & Light projects, there are close to $7 billion in additional industrial projects being developed in Dade County.
Medical technology leader, Becton Dickinson and Company (NYSE:BDX) (Franklin Lakes, New Jersey) began construction late last year on a $50 million biopharma vaccine manufacturing plant in Miami, Florida. Becton Dickinson is retrofitting the former IVAX Pharmaceuticals building in North Miami. IDEA Engineering (Bridgeport, Connecticut) is providing architectural and engineering services and Skanska USA Building (Dania, Florida) is the construction manager on the project. Construction is scheduled for completion in May 2010.
