Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Northwest Electric Power Design Institute (NWEPDI) (Xi'an, Shaanxi, China), a regional subsidiary of China Power Engineering Consultancy Corporation (CPECC) (Beijing), recently received the Notice of Bid Award issued by Ningxia Power Generation Group Company Limited's (Yinchuan, China) Tendering Leadership Team for Thermal Power Projects, which nominated NWEPDI as the winner for the engineering and survey services in the feasibility study stage of Ningxia Zhongning Power Plant's 2,000-megawatt (MW) expansion project, CPECC announced on October 26, 2009.
Zhongning Power Plant is in the town of Xinsigou in Zhongning County, in northwest China's Ningxia Autonomous Region. The power plant was initially commissioned in 1975, with two 25-MW coal-fired units. In May 2003, the power plant was reconstructed as Zhongning Power Generation Company Limited, with a 50:50 joint investment from Ningxia Power Generation Group and China Huadian Corporation. In June 2003, the power plant began construction on two 330-MW thermal power units in its second stage expansion, and both units were commissioned in 2005. After several expansions, the power plant has a total installed capacity of 1,210 MW, including four 137.5-MW units built in the 1990s and two 330-MW units commissioned in December 2004 and November 2005, respectively.
The current expansion will be Phase III of the project. The company plans to build two 1,000-MW, air-cooled, ultra-supercritical coal-fired units in the mode of "replacing inefficient small units with large units."
Presently, the feasibility study of the project has been fully deployed. Preparation of the feasibility study will be completed and submitted for approval within this year. According to the schedule, the expansion will begin construction in April 2010. The first unit of the project is expected to begin operation in October 2014, and the second unit will begin operation in March 2015.
Upon completion, the project not only will meet the power demand for Ningxia Power Grid, but greatly promote coal resource development in Ningxia, optimize the allocation of energy resources nationwide, and play an important role in promoting local economic development.
