PCS Phosphate Plans More Than $370 Million of Projects in the U.S.

This $100 million unit will produce an estimated 5,400 tons per day of sulfuric acid when completed, which is expected to happen late next year. This project is one of several major expansions planned in the United States by PCS over the next couple of years. In total, more than $370 million in future capital and maintenance projects have been identified by Industrial Info as part of its North American Project Database.

Nearly $200 million of this spending is for capital projects reportedly approved and in some phase of engineering or construction. The construction starts for these projects range from January 2008 to early 2010. Another $50 million has been reported for future plant maintenance turnarounds. The products manufactured and the technologies used in most PCS plants are very corrosive in nature, making it necessary to perform these costly and routine maintenance turnarounds for inspections and repairs.

PCS's plant site in Augusta, Georgia, will be home to the second largest group of projects planned by PCS in the United States over the next few years. Planning has begun for a major reformer reharp that could take place next year, as well as the potential expansion and debottlenecking of the ammonia unit in 2010.

Operating more than 15 plants across the United States and Canada that produce products for the chemical, agricultural, food and feed industries, PCS appears to be on an aggressive path of growth to meet demand. Despite the current economic worries over the domestic economy, this growth seems consistent with the increased demands for fertilizers and agricultural chemicals to support increased crop harvests and global demand.
