Peru's Talara Refinery in Final Phases of Modernization

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Cordoba, Argentina)--Peru's state-owned refiner, Petroperu S.A., is performing commissioning and start-up activities for its Talara Refinery modernization project. The crude unit, which passed the maximum capacity guarantee tests in August, was restarted in early November, along with the vacuum and hydrogen units. Petroperu continues to stabilize and ramp up production at the complex.

The modernization project began in 2019 and was interrupted from March to mid-2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which pushed back the original completion date. Since then, Petroperu has begun returning its naphtha hydrotreater, diesel hydrotreater and FCCU gasoline hydrotreater units to operations, followed by the flexicoker and associated units. The restart process and commercial start-up are scheduled to be completed in December.

Once fully operational, the Talara Refinery's capacity will increase from 65,000 to 95,000 barrels per day (BBL/d). The project also aims to produce 50 parts per million of sulfur fuel content.
