Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) has submitted a request to the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) to begin licensing 10 offshore areas for the potential development of wind energy projects to boost the company's presence in this sector.

The areas requested include seven in the northeast region, two in the southeast and one in the south. Together, these areas have the capacity to host wind projects with total power generation of 23 gigawatts (GW).

The request to start the licensing of these areas does not grant Petrobras the rights to develop the projects but it signals the company's interest in them.

In a company statement, Petrobras Chief Executive Officer Jean Paul Prates said, "This initiative represents Petrobras' effective entry into the offshore wind energy segment. And this step is compatible with Petrobras' greatness. We are preparing the company to become the largest developer of wind energy projects in Brazil. We are the company that has the most knowledge of the Brazilian offshore environment and we have a tradition in maritime operations that can bring relevant synergies to offshore wind projects."

Petrobras has started conducting a wind mapping campaign in Brazil in an effort to evaluate the technical feasibility of projects across the country, and to prepare the company for the possible development of these areas.

Besides expanding its own projects across Brazil, Petrobras also has announced partnerships with other companies to exploit the potential of renewable energy across the country.

In March, Petrobras and Equinor (NYSE:EQNR) (Stavanger, Norway) announced the evaluation of seven offshore Brazil wind energy projects with the potential to produce 14.5 GW.

Moreover, Petrobras also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with TotalEnergies SE's (NYSE:TTE) (Courbevoie, France) to evaluate the development of wind, solar and hydrogen opportunities in Brazil.

Overall, Petrobras is trying to balance out the expansion of its hydrocarbon sector with the development of renewable energy across its operations.

According to the Brazilian electricity agency, ANEEL, wind energy represents almost 14% of Brazil's power capacity, based on the latest available data.
