Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The New England market region, which includes Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, is not necessarily known as a hive of industrial activity. However, Industrial Info is tracking more than $16.5 billion in projects that are under construction in the region. The Pharma-Biotech Industry, with more than $7.3 billion in projects underway, leads in terms of project value, followed by Industrial Manufacturing, with $6.6 billion, and Power, with $1.6 billion.

Most of the Pharma-Biotech activity in the region is concentrated around Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Such projects include a nine-story, LEED Silver-certified research and development laboratory building by Bristol Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY) (New York, New York) in Cambridge. Most of the 479,000-square-foot building will be allocated to Bristol Myers Squibb and the remainder for other tenants. Construction began early last year and is expected to be completed in late 2022. Also in Cambridge, Sanofi Group (NASDAQ:SNY) (Paris, France) is underway with a two-building project for the research and development of specialty treatments for rare genetic diseases. Construction on the buildings began in 2019 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Click here for the project reports.
Among the largest Industrial Manufacturing projects in the region is Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (Boston) New Bedford and Fall River commuter rail extension near the south coast of Massachusetts. The project entails the construction of 22.3 miles of new rail line, and the refurbishment/upgrade of 47.6 miles of existing line. In addition, seven new stations will be constructed and six existing ones refurbished. This long-term project kicked off in 2014 and has an estimated project life of 10 years. Two separate projects involving submarines are underway in Groton, Connecticut. One of these entails providing power to the Naval submarine base. Late last year, a 7.4-megawatt (MW) fuel cell addition was completed (see project report), and now additional infrastructure and power sources are being constructed to create a microgrid system that will include 5 MW of existing combined heat and power and a 4-MW rooftop solar array. Once in place, the 11.4-MW microgrid system will supply the base with independent energy and enable it to operate facilities in case of an outage or emergency. Click here for the project report on the infrastructure and solar array.
General Dynamics Corporation (NYSE:GD) (Reston, Virginia), the third-largest defense contractor in the U.S., is underway with an expansion of its shipyard and submarine manufacturing plant in Groton. The existing 400,000-square-foot facility is being extended with the construction of the 200,000-square-foot South Yard Assembly Building and a new floating dry dock to help facilitate the construction of the new Columbia-class submarine, which according to news media, is scheduled to enter service in 2031. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
No U.S. region is complete without at least one project from Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN), and a large fulfillment center is under construction in Windsor, Connecticut. The five-story, 3.7 million-square-foot building will have a ground-level footprint of 823,000 square feet and feature 63 loading docks. Construction started last summer but was halted earlier this year, after a series of nooses was found at the site, to allow the FBI to investigate. Additional security cameras were installed, and construction is expected to be completed in the coming months. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The largest Power Industry project in the region is the decommissioning of the 620-MW Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon, Vermont. The plant began operating in 1972, and the reactor was permanently shut down in late 2014. In 2016, then-plant owner Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana) sold the facility to subsidiaries of NorthStar Group Services Incorporated (New York, New York) to accelerate decommissioning and site restoration by 2030, although this is expected to be completed sooner. Decommissioning activities kicked off in 2019. According to local news media, the process is on schedule and on track financially. "NorthStar appears to be on course to complete the project with available funding," Eric Guzman, an attorney for the Vermont Department of Public Service, told a state panel last month.
