Pilings Being Poured for New Coal-Fired Boiler at Ag Complex in Nebraska

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Ag Processing Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska), the world’s largest soybean processing cooperative, has started construction on a multi-million dollar capital investment for a new boiler at a site in Hastings, Nebraska. The Hastings complex is comprised of a corn processing plant, ethanol plant, soybean processing facility, and vegetable oil refinery. Four years ago, Ag Processing applied for permits for the installation of a new coal-fired boiler and auxiliary equipment in an effort to reduce the company’s dependence on natural gas and to ensure the long-term viability of operations at the complex. Last fall, the company received the necessary permits and proceeded with site preparation immediately, thereafter. The new boiler has a scheduled start-up date of August 2008.

Plans call for the installation of a new 300,000 lbs/hr (382MM BTU) circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler and lime injection system that will use low sulfur coal from the Powder River Basin as the primary fuel. In addition to the boiler, auxiliary equipment will include coal handling and storage silos, fly ash handling and storage silo, an evaporative cooler, and a limestone storage bunker.

CFB boiler technology provides inherent control of SO2 and NOx; whereby, primary emissions from the boiler consist of particulate matter. Emission control equipment will include NH3 injection (selective non-catalytic reduction), several baghouses, and dust collection systems.

Ag Processing purchased a single-drum boiler from Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) and contracted The Haskell Company (Jacksonville, Florida) along with Stanley Jones Corporation (prior to filing bankruptcy) to deliver a design-build project. Haskell has subcontracted the boiler erection to Steam & Control Systems, Incorporated (Chattanooga, Tennessee) with mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and pump packages to I.C. Thomasson Associates, Incorporated (Nashville, Tennessee). Haskell expects the arrival of structural steel on site April 1st and to begin receiving boiler parts in sixty days.
