Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). A proposed coal-fired power plant (Mustang Energy Center) in McKinley County near Grants, New Mexico was given a gentle nudge towards coming to fruition, when the United States Department of Energy awarded Peabody Energy Corporation (NYSE:BTU)(Saint Louis, Missouri) and three other companies, Airborne Clean Energy (Terrace Park, Ohio), a subsidiary of Airborne Technologies Incorporated (Calgary, Alberta), Icon Construction Incorporated, a private minority-owned corporation, (Dayton, Ohio), and Veolia Water Systems (Houston, Texas), a subsidiary of Veolia Environment (NYSE:VE)(Paris, France), a $19.7 million grant to install Airborne Clean Energy's $79 million Airborne Process to achieve ultra-low air emissions in a commercial demonstration.
Mustang Energy Center, a pulverized coal power plant is proposed to be built on Peabody's land, near the coal reserves of Peabody's Lee Ranch Coal Company, and will use approximately one million tons of coal to produce 300-megawatts (MW). An Airborne Process scrubber will be used for multiple purposes. First, it will be used to reduce air emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and mercury (Hg). The scrubber will use sodium bicarbonate and is expected to reduce the emissions of SO2 by 99.5%, NOx by 98% and Hg by 90%. The second part of the process regenerates the sodium bicarbonate by processing the SO2 and NOx to create sodium sulfate and sodium nitrate. The process then adds CO2 and creates sodium bicarbonate and a granular fertilizer.
The $300 million energy center will also use other technologies to insure that emissions will be kept to a minimum. To help keep down air emissions, low NOx burners will be installed to reduce NOx, as well as a fabric filter (baghouse) to reduce particulate matter. To reduce water usage, there will be an air-cooled condenser that will reduce water usage by 80% from what would normally be utilized on a 300 MW coal-fired power plant.
